Unit 4 Legal Studies concentrates on the Constitution, Parliament and the People. We look into the Constitution and how it shapes our legal and political system in Australia by learning about the inner workers of parliament; the structure and their roles and how individuals are involved law-making and law reform. We were lucky enough to have virtual incursions with both Steph Ryan MP at the end of last term and the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, last Friday. Through these incursions, we were able to further our knowledge and conceptualise what we have learnt.

Students chat with Steph Ryan towards the end of Term 2, before stage 3 lockdown

The session with Steph Ryan MP, allowed for great insight into local issues, and the ways in which young people of today can contribute to both political and societal differences. Ms. Ryan also touched on her role models, and women in power who shaped her and pushed her to get to where she is today. As well as this Ms. Ryan explained how important role models and mentors are in shaping people to become the best that they can be. This gave legal students a real opportunity to reflect on their future endeavours and realise that they can achieve what they wish and contribute to the community with the help of others

Students chat with Her Excellency the Honourable Linda DessauAC

In the session with Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC and Mr. Howard AM QC via a video call, students were able to ask a number of stimulating questions to gain further understanding of parliamentary law making and the role of the Governor. Listening to Her Excellency, an influential female representative, inspired us and the other female legal students to feel empowered and excited to enter the world of law and politics.

The virtual incursions with Steph Ryan MP and Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, allowed the Year 11 and 12 legal studies cohort to increase the depth and extent of their knowledge in to order to assist in their learning of the curriculum and provide them with an academic edge. Finally, we were inspired to consider social justice as we transition to the next chapter in of lives.
