The myMAP subjects below link to VCE subjects related to the learning domain of Mathematics. All students undertake Core Mathematics across their myMAP years and may also choose to take additional Mathematics subject options that are best for them. There are limited pre-requisites for entry into VCE, but students are strongly encouraged to select subjects that align with those that they wish to take in VCE.

Foundation Mathematics

Foundation Mathematics Units 1 and 2 focus on providing students with the mathematical knowledge, skills, understanding and dispositions to solve problems in real contexts for a range of workplace, personal, further learning, and community settings relevant to contemporary society. They are also designed as preparation for Foundation Mathematics Units 3 and 4 and contain assumed knowledge and skills for these units.

Foundation Mathematics Units 3 and 4 focus on providing students with the mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding to solve problems in real contexts for a range of workplace, personal, further learning, community and global settings relevant to contemporary society. The areas of study for Units 3 and 4 are ‘Algebra, number and structure’, ‘Data analysis, probability and statistics’, ‘Discrete mathematics’ and ‘Space and measurement’. All four areas of study are to be completed over the two units, and content equivalent to two areas of study covered in each unit. The selected content for each unit should be developed using contexts present in students’ other studies, work and personal or other familiar situations, and in national and international contexts, events and developments.

General Mathematics

General Mathematics Units 1 and 2 cater for a range of student interests, provide preparation for the study of VCE General Mathematics at the Units 3 and 4 level and contain assumed knowledge and skills for these units. The areas of study for Unit 1 of General Mathematics are ‘Data analysis, probability and statistics’, ‘Algebra, number and structure’, ‘Functions, relations and graphs’ and ‘Discrete mathematics’.

General Mathematics Units 3 and 4 focus on real-life application of mathematics and consist of the areas of study ‘Data analysis, probability and statistics’ and ‘Discrete mathematics’.

Mathematical Methods

Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 provide an introductory study of simple elementary functions of a single real variable, algebra, calculus, probability and statistics and their applications in a variety of practical and theoretical contexts. The units are designed as preparation for Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4 and contain assumed knowledge and skills for these units.

Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4 extend the introductory study of simple elementary functions of a single real variable, to include combinations of these functions, algebra, calculus, probability and statistics, and their applications in a variety of practical and theoretical contexts. Units 3 and 4 consist of the areas of study ‘Algebra, number and structure’, ‘Data analysis, probability and statistics’, ‘Calculus’, and ‘Functions, relations and graphs’, which must be covered in progression from Unit 3 to Unit 4, with an appropriate selection of content for each of Unit 3 and Unit 4. Assumed knowledge and skills for Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4 are contained in Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2, and will be drawn on, as applicable, in the development of related content from the areas of study, and key knowledge and key skills for the outcomes of Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4.

Specialist Mathematics

Specialist Mathematics Units 1 and 2 provide a course of study for students who wish to undertake an in-depth study of mathematics, with an emphasis on concepts, skills and processes related to mathematical structure, modelling, problem-solving, reasoning and proof. This study has a focus on interest in the discipline of mathematics and investigation of a broad range of applications, as well as development of a sound background for further studies in mathematics and mathematics related fields. Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 and Specialist Mathematics Units 1 and 2, taken in conjunction, provide a comprehensive preparation for Specialist Mathematics Units 3 and 4. Study of Specialist Mathematics Units 3 and 4 also assumes concurrent study or previous completion of Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4.

Specialist Mathematics Units 3 and 4 consist of the areas of study: ‘Algebra, number and structure’, ‘Calculus’, ‘Data analysis, probability and statistics’, ‘Discrete mathematics’, ‘Functions, relations and graphs’, and ‘Space and measurement’. The development of course content should highlight mathematical structure, reasoning and proof and applications across a range of modelling contexts with an appropriate selection of content for each of Unit 3 and Unit 4. The selection of content for Unit 3 and Unit 4 should be constructed so that there is a balanced and progressive development of knowledge and skills with connections among the areas of study being developed as appropriate across Unit 3 and Unit 4.

Pre-Mathematical Methods

Pre-General Mathematics

Pre-general maths is a semester-long subject that provides a systematic review of content to enhance students’ preparation for VCE General Maths. This course includes linear algebra and graphing, measurement, geometry and basic trigonometry, probability and statistics. The use of CAS technology is introduced in this course.

Business Maths

This mathematics subject focuses on the practical application of maths skills in the context of business and entrepreneurship, specifically incorporating Goods and Services Tax (GST) calculations. Students will learn essential mathematical concepts and techniques needed to run their own business or engage in business-related activities while accounting for GST. They will explore topics such as financial management, including calculating profit and loss, budgeting, and analysing percentage changes in sales and expenses while factoring in GST. Additionally, students will learn about pricing strategies, including calculating GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive prices. Through real-world scenarios and case studies, students will develop their mathematical problem-solving abilities and gain an understanding of how mathematics, including GST calculations, plays a crucial role in successful business operations. This subject aims to equip students with the necessary mathematical skills and knowledge to excel in the business world, specifically in handling GST calculations effectively.

Trade Maths

This subject is designed to prepare students for trade careers or TAFE studies. It focuses on practical applications of mathematics, teaching measurement, geometry, algebra, and statistics in real-world contexts. Students learn technical drawing interpretation, measurement calculation, cost estimation, and data analysis relevant to trade professions. Through hands-on activities and collaborative projects, they develop strong mathematical skills and problem-solving abilities. This subject instils confidence and competence necessary for pursuing trades, product design subjects or further studies at TAFE institutions.

Mathematics

Mathematics students use an individualised learning model, Maths Pathway, which is based on initial diagnostic testing of their mastery of the Mathematics Curriculum. Students work through a two-week testing cycle where they have the opportunity to grow their learning through formative assessment, reflection and explicit teaching. The Maths Pathway program is supplemented with Rich Learning Tasks that give students the opportunity to further consolidate the mathematical skills they are learning.

Please note that as Pre-General Mathematics is an elective Mathematics subject and as such students who are undertaking Pre-General Mathematics are expected to complete their Core Mathematics subject concurrently.

Pre-Mathematical Methods

Pre-Mathematical Methods is a year-long course that provides additional content for students to be extended in their mathematical studies. The course offers an opportunity for students to prepare for VCE Mathematics: Methods through the study of circular functions and equations, logarithms and logarithmic functions, application of surds and fractional indices, factorising and solving quadratic expressions, application of trigonometry to three dimensional problems involving cones, spheres and composite shapes, conditional, dependent and independent probability as well as distribution, variation and measurement error in data sets. The use of CAS technology is integrated throughout the course.

Please be aware that for entry into Units 3 & 4 VCE Specialist Mathematics, it is assumed that students have studied or are concurrently studying VCE Units 3 & 4 VCE Mathematical Methods.

Please note that as Pre-Mathematical Methods is an elective Mathematics subject and as such students who are undertaking Pre-Mathematical Methods are expected to complete their Core Mathematics subject concurrently

Mathematics

Students explore Mathematics through a variety of learning opportunities including small group and whole-class teaching, collaborative activities with their peers, reflection, and data-informed differentiated digital tasks. The content covers the Victorian Curriculum strands of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics, and Probability and students are supported by their teacher, peers, and with structured homework expectations through their development of their mathematical Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving, and Reasoning. Students whose Mathematics data and learning habits indicate that they are working above the Victorian Curriculum standard for their age have the opportunity to apply for acceleration into higher levels of study.

Acceleration Information: Acceleration in mathematics may include taking a myMAP level of core mathematics above a students' year level, or taking Pre-General Mathematics or Pre-Mathematical Methods prior to the fourth year of the myMAP program. Acceleration in mathematics will occur on an application basis. Students wishing to accelerate in mathematics must complete an acceleration application form, and discussions will take place between families and the school if the student is eligible for this based on their standardised testing results, learning habits and current mathematics achievement level. There are also some students who will be offered a chance to study an accelerated VCE class if appropriate. Please see the course builder for options across the myMAP years.
