The myMAP subjects below link to VCE subjects related to the learning domain of Technologies. Students choose the options that are best for them. There are no pre-requisites for entry into their chosen senior pathway, but students are strongly encouraged to select subjects that align with those that they wish to take in VCE. For example, a student may select one or more of the options that are on the ‘road’ to VCE Product Design Wood (sandstone, white, yellow, light blue and dark blue). The students can select to study these in any order but they are encouraged to select subjects in order of difficulty across the myMAP years (from sandstone, white, yellow, light blue to dark blue). In this instance, it is recommended that if choosing multiple Product Design Wood options during myMAP, they are studied in the order listed above although studying these at the same time would also be suitable.

Food Studies

VCE Food Studies takes an interdisciplinary approach to the exploration of food, with an emphasis on extending food knowledge and skills, and building individual pathways to health and wellbeing through the application of practical food skills. VCE Food Studies provides a framework for informed and confident food selection and food preparation within today’s complex architecture of influences and choices. Students explore food from a wide range of perspectives. They study past and present patterns of eating, Australian and global food production systems, and the many physical and social functions and roles of food. Students research sustainability and the legal, economic, psychological, sociocultural, health, ethical and political dimensions of food, and critically evaluate information, marketing messages and new trends.

Food Studies

Food Studies encompasses a comprehensive range of content spanning from Units 1 to 4 of the VCE Food Studies Curriculum. This introductory experience provides students with multiple opportunities to familiarise themselves with the expectations, structure, and subject matter that will be covered in their VCE studies. The subject emphasises key areas such as the history of food, food in Australia, the food industry, social factors influencing food choices, and The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. Students aspiring to excel in their VCE Food Studies Subject will have abundant opportunities to practise, comprehend, and embed their learning. Through simulated SACs and mid-semester exams, students will fully immerse themselves in the VCE curriculum, from content exploration to assessment.

Nourishing bodies, Enriching lives

Nourishing Bodies and Enriching Lives explores the intersection of food science and societal influences on dietary choices. Students delve into food appreciation, digestion physiology, and the absorption of macronutrients. They analyse food advice, including guidance on allergies, intolerances, and the Australian Dietary Guidelines, applying this understanding to assess diverse diets and their impact on gut health and overall well-being. Additionally, students investigate eating habits in Australia, considering social factors affecting food access and choices, as well as food's role in shaping identity and emotions. They explore how politics and media influence food habits and beliefs. Furthermore, students learn strategies for promoting healthy eating in children and gain practical experience in preparing nutritious meals for families. Students will be assessed throughout the semester along with an end of semester exam.

Hospitality Industry Operations

The Hospitality Industry Operations course encourages students to delve into the vast opportunities offered by the hospitality sector. Through interactions with industry professionals and hands-on activities, students can determine their interest in pursuing a career in hospitality. By acquiring micro-credentials and engaging in theoretical practice, students explore various aspects essential for establishing a successful career in this field. Practical skills will be complemented by a robust theoretical foundation. Additionally, students will undergo assessment through an end-of-semester exam, preparing them for similar evaluations at the VET Hospitality level.

Multicultural Food

Multicultural Food explores the history and culture of food in Australia, starting with Indigenous food before European settlement. Students will look into Indigenous practices, history, food and culture. Students will then be introduced to food and cooking methods brought across through migration. Students will be encouraged to trace back their family time line and look at how they fit into the food story of Australia. Students will constantly be challenged to look into the argument ‘Does Australia have its own cuisine?’. By understanding political and government policies around migration in Australia, students will be able to connect how the Australian plate is constantly evolving and changing.

Food for life

Food for Life explores food production and consumption in Australia, covering topics such as sustainability, ethics, packaging, and waste. Students also learn about food labelling laws and take part in practical activities like cooking and taste testing. The unit highlights the link between food choices and health, discussing the risks associated with poor diets and measures to prevent diseases. It also looks into food allergies and intolerances, focusing on maintaining a healthy diet throughout life, especially for adolescents. The primary focus is to help students with their food choices in their lives now and into the future.

Cooking Skills

Cooking Skills is a semester-long subject, with the primary focus being to assist students in recognising the food consumed in their lives and the impact this has on themselves, their community, and the globe. Students are encouraged to practise and adhere to food safety and occupational health and safety requirements to guarantee a secure kitchen environment. They will explore food in their lives, critiquing the best methods for selecting food that complements their lifestyle. Additionally, students will explore alternative food cultures, examining how other cultures consume food and comparing this with their lives in Australia.

Art Creative Practice (Textiles)

VCE Art Creative Practice introduces the role of art in contemporary and historical cultures and societies, and values the meaningful and unique impact of artists on the development of arts knowledge, tradition and experiences, both locally and globally. Students build an understanding of how artists, through their practice and the artworks they create, communicate personal experiences and ideas, and cultural values, beliefs and viewpoints. In this study, students view artworks and investigate the working practices of artists from different cultures and periods of time. Students are challenged to articulate their understanding of the meanings and messages contained within artworks and to examine the effects of artworks upon the viewers or audiences who experience them. Students learn to pose and solve problems, and work independently and collaboratively, to create and convey meaning through art making.

Textiles FASHION VS WEARABLE ART

This unit will see students use creativity and innovation throughout the design process as they create two pieces inspired by the commercial and high fashion industries. One everyday item of clothing, and one a Met Gala worthy mask that is a work of Art. Students will investigate and be inspired by a range of designers that will influence their concepts. They will explore fashion illustration techniques, garment construction, colour theory, sustainable practices, ethical, social and environmental issues.

Textiles PRINT AND PATTERN

Students undertaking this area of study have the opportunity to develop further machining skills while creating textile products. Students use the design process to design and produce a cushion from a pattern they create themselves. Students explore a range of fabric printing techniques that will be printed onto the cushions. Students will also be introduced to Digital Surface Pattern Design as they experiment with shape and colour. Textile products are commonly used in interior design and as such, students have an opportunity to produce a quality soft furnishing product. Knowledge and understanding of sustainable, ethical and social factors in design and production of textiles products is incorporated in this unit.

Textiles DESIGN AND DECOR

This unit involves introducing students to a range of hand-sewing and machine sewing techniques including embroidery and beading. Students work as designers – creating design solutions using a design brief and design process (investigating, generating, producing and evaluating). Students create textile products like an embroidered and beaded wall hanging or purse. Students investigate historical and contemporary fashion in accessories and décor through the analysis of designers in these contexts.

Textiles DYE AND DESIGN

Students gain an understanding of the process of dying fabric through experimenting with a range of tying techniques to create patterns. Students will navigate through the design process to tie dye a t-shirt or tote bag with a target audience in mind. Generation of ideas includes annotated sketches, drawing, and a detailed process to follow during construction. Students will create a design that will be applied using fabric markers and paint onto their product, overlaying the tie dye and imagery. Students will investigate commercial and fast fashion through analysis of contemporary textiles industries and understand the context of what they are making by hand in contrast to what is mass produced.

Product Design: Metal

The course is seen as a two-year approach because the knowledge and skills gained in Units 1 & 2 are critical to Units 3 & 4. Product Design and Technology is based on developing and creating design ideas into functional, innovative and attractive products. Students develop the knowledge and skills related to working with an end user, creating a folio that includes different drawing methods, researching the product design factors and evaluating the designed solution. The subject has 3 main parts: a (SAT)folio, making a product and understanding the links between design and industry and making products, with attention to social, environmental and economic considerations.

Metal

Advanced Jewellery Design and Construction: students are given a design brief that requires students to draw upon previous knowledge and skills to solve a complex problem. Through showing their understanding and knowledge of metal properties and characteristics, students will learn, research and put forward multiple visual design solutions through various platforms e.g. perspective drawings, computer aided drawings etc. Complex processes and the use of multiple semi-precious/materials, lost wax casting or cuttlefish casting will require students to show competency in the safe use of multiple tools to complete their final pieces.

Metal

Jewellery Design: students will use a design brief to creatively put forward Jewellery design solutions that meet the constraints and considerations of the brief. In developing these options students will develop a portfolio that explores multiple ways of solving the design needs through research, sketches, technical drawings and computer aided drawings.Students will be taught a range of complex jewellery techniques that will need to be considered throughout the production phase. Students will learn the safe use of machinery of multiple tools (buffing machine, pedestal drill, heat treatment and silver soldering).

Metal

Worn jewellery: students will analyse a design brief and come up with practical design solutions meeting the constraints and considerations. Students will learn how to communicate their solutions/ideas through isometric working drawings, sketches and computer-aided drawings. Using combinations of metals and associated materials, students research and safely learn a range of complex processes to produce and address the design brief. Students will have access to basic tools and machinery and be guided in their safe use (buffing machine, pedestal drill and other associated equipment) to produce their final product.

Metal

Shaping and stamping jewellery: students will use a design brief to creatively address solutions to a design problem. Students will research and visually express these ideas through drawings and sketches that meet the design brief constraints and considerations. Through learning the properties of different types of metals and how they can be utilised sustainably, students will start to explore how they can shape, cut and stamp metal to create decorative products. Importantly, students will also learn how to use hand tools and machinery safely in the workplace environment.

Wood

Advanced Timber Joinery and Construction: students are required to draw upon previously learned knowledge and skills to solve a difficult design problem. Using their understanding and knowledge of timber properties and characteristics, students will research and put forward multiple visual design solutions through various platforms (eg. 3 point perspective drawings, computer aided drawings). Complex joinery and the use of multiple timbers/materials will require students to show competency in the safe use of multiple tools and understanding of workplace requirements to complete a high quality product that meets the needs of the design brief.

Wood

Timber Furniture Design: students will break down a design brief to creatively put forward timber design solutions. In developing these options students develop a portfolio that explores multiple ways of solving the design needs through research, sketches, technical drawings and computer aided drawings. Students will be taught a range of complex joinery techniques that will need to be considered throughout the production phase. Students will learn the safe use of machinery of multiple tools (route, biscuit machine, pedestal drill, horizontal borer) and workplace expectations in order to complete and evaluate their final product.

Basic Timber Joinery: students will analyse a design brief and come up with practical design solutions meeting the constraints and considerations. In expressing these solutions the students will learn how to communicate these ideas through isometric working drawings, sketches and computer-aided drawings. Using timber as the main medium, students will research and safely learn a range of complex joinery to produce and address the design brief. Students will have access to basic tools and machinery (biscuit machine, sanders, trimmers) and be guided in their safe use to produce their final product.

Laminating Timbers: Students investigate a design brief and creatively address practical solutions to the design problem.Students will research and visually express these ideas through drawings and sketches that meet the design brief constraints and considerations. Through learning the properties of timber and how it can be utilised sustainably, students will start to explore how they can creatively glue, cut and mould timber to create a practical product. Importantly, students will learn the safe use of machinery in a workplace environment to complete a timber product that meets the design brief.

Wood

Students will have the opportunity to explore various design briefs and learn about different timbers. Students will also learn the safe use of machinery in the workplace environment. Students will develop a product that meets the design brief.

Data Analytics

In Data Analytics students apply the problem-solving methodology to identify and extract data through the use of software tools such as database, spreadsheet and data visualisation software to create data visualisations or infographics. Students develop an understanding of the analysis, design and development stages of the problem-solving methodology. Students also focus on determining the findings of a research question by developing infographics or dynamic data visualisations based on large complex data sets and on the security strategies used by an organisation to protect data and information from threats.

Applied Computing

In Applied Computing students are introduced to the stages of the problem-solving methodology. Students focus on how data can be used within software tools such as databases and spreadsheets to create data visualisations, and the use of programming languages to develop working software solutions. Students also focus on developing innovative solutions to needs or opportunities that they have identified, and propose strategies for reducing security risks to data and information in a networked environment.

Game Development

In Game Development students will be designing and developing a major project using Game Maker and as well as developing basic functions with the use of a programming language. Students will be implementing skills they have learned during the course towards their major project. Students will also be exploring the history of game development and gaming genres. They look at the purpose, goals, and mechanics of the games and consider their intended audiences. This course will provide students with the skills and knowledge towards VCE Applied Computing.

ESports

In Esports students will delve into the world of competitive gaming, exploring various aspects such as an Esports system, networks and e-safety measures. The practical component of esports will form a significant part of this course. Students will have hands-on experiences and opportunities to engage in gameplay, competitions, and team-based activities. They will gain insights into the strategies, tactics, and teamwork involved in competitive gaming. Students will also explore the hardware and software requirements necessary for optimal gaming performance. Furthermore, the course will address e-safety measures, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and secure gaming environment and strategies in protecting gamers from potential risks associated with esports.

Digital Technology and Game Design

In Digital Technology and Game Design students learn the processes involved and apply themselves in a variety of tasks to create a fully functioning game. Students explore the key concepts and fundamentals involved to develop the necessary skills to be confident GameMaker developers. Students will also explore the importance of network security, ensuring data is not compromised. Students will learn about the history of the Internet of Things and predicted future of innovative ideas in the digital world. They will engage in the four problem solving processes of analysing, designing, developing and evaluating when completing assessment pieces. This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills that can be applied to further Digital Technology subjects.

Digital Technology: Code Impact

In Code Impact students learn why coding is relevant in the world around us. They will use a range of online software programs, simulators and devices to run a range of code languages. Students explore how different code function and are interpreted into a range of suitable outcomes. They will use problem solving skills and knowledge to develop the solutions they have set out to achieve. Students will learn about the importance of data security and networks and the impact on the digital world. They will engage in the four problem solving processes of analysing, designing, developing and evaluating when completing assessment pieces. This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills that can be applied to further Digital Technology subjects.

Digital Programming and Innovation

In Digital Programming and Innovation students will use a range of software programs to develop knowledge, skills and confidence to create a range of digital solutions. Students will learn how to create a game using programming concepts. They will explore 3D software to create a solution to meet client needs. Students will also learn about the impact of digital technology. They will comprehend the importance of research to effectively inform users through a range of data visualisations. They will engage in the four problem solving processes of analysing, designing, developing and evaluating when completing assessment pieces. This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills that can be applied to further Digital Technology subjects.
