The myMAP subjects below link to VCE subjects related to the learning domain of Visual Arts. Students choose the options that are best for them. There are no pre-requisites for entry into their chosen senior pathway, but students are strongly encouraged to select subjects that align with those that they wish to take in VCE. Students are encouraged to select subjects in order of difficulty across the myMAP years (from sandstone, white, yellow, light blue to dark blue) in order to build relevant skills. For example, a student may select one or more of the options that are on the ‘road’ to VCE Media, including a white course, two yellow courses, a light blue course and a dark blue course. In this instance, it is recommended that the electives are studied in the order they are listed on the ‘road to Media’ (although a student may choose to do two of these electives at the same time).

Art Making and Exhibiting

Learning in VCE Art Making and Exhibiting provides students with opportunities to recognise their individual potential as artists, encourages self-expression and creativity, and can build confidence and a sense of individual identity. The study allows students to explore and experiment in creating, developing and engaging with the visual arts and helps build a strong skill set. Learning through, about and in the visual arts develops students’ critical thinking skills and their ability to interpret the worlds they live in. Students are encouraged to work both independently and collaboratively, as learning from each other can develop innovative and exciting ideas.

Art Creative Practice (Textiles)

VCE Art Creative Practice (Textiles) introduces the role of art in contemporary and historical cultures and societies, and values the meaningful and unique impact of artists on the development of arts knowledge, tradition and experiences, both locally and globally. Students build an understanding of how artists, through their practice and the artworks they create, communicate personal experiences and ideas, and cultural values, beliefs and viewpoints. In this study, students view artworks and investigate the working practices of artists from different cultures and periods of time. Students are challenged to articulate their understanding of the meanings and messages contained within artworks and to examine the effects of artworks upon the viewers or audiences who experience them. Students learn to pose and solve problems, and work independently and collaboratively, to create and convey meaning through art making.

Media

Media influences the way people spend their time, shapes the way they perceive themselves and others, and plays a crucial role in the creation and exchange of personal, social, cultural, national and global identities. In this study, students examine and analyse the relationships between audiences and, through their study of the theoretical and practical elements of Media, become media creators.

Visual Communication Design

Students examine the way visual language can be used to convey ideas, information and messages in the fields of communication, environmental and industrial design. Designers create and communicate through visual means to influence everyday life for individuals, communities and societies. The design process provides a structure to organise design thinking and is shaped by considerations of aesthetics and functionality, as well as social, cultural, environmental and economic factors.

Marketing

Students examine audience/client characteristics and how to communicate to and cater to their needs and expectations. Case studies are used as they investigate their own potential audiences/clients for future projects. Students apply this knowledge to a school based marketing project in their chosen media forms, focusing on teamwork and the production process to achieve their objective.

Art: Studio Practice

Students learn about artists from different cultures and times and evaluate how they communicate ideas and meanings in artworks. They learn to select and manipulate materials, techniques and processes to express their own viewpoints and themes in artworks. Students develop techniques In a variety of artforms, which may include drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. This is a folio-based subject, which is good preparation for students considering Arts for VCE.

Art: Making and Creating

Explore the Arts through the creative lens. Develop artworks through experimentation within a broad range of art forms such as Painting, Drawing, Printmaking and Sculpture. You’ll develop practical skills and critical thinking which will inform your work as artists and audience. Curate and exhibit your own artworks, examining real world experiences, while appreciating a range of artists and artworks that will inspire your art making processes.

Art: Exploring Materials

Students will learn how to manipulate a variety of mediums to create mixed media artworks. Students will also learn about a variety of feature artists, exploring the artists’ practice and how the processes and construction of the artworks link to the intention and meanings of the work. Students explore a variety of techniques and processes to experiment and create a folio of artworks to combine processes. Some of these include paint, pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolour and acrylic.

Sketching and Drawing

Students will develop skills in sketching and drawing using a variety of different materials such as graphites, charcoal, pencils, and a variety of other wet and dry mediums. Students will research a selection of contemporary and traditional artists to inspire their own artworks and produce a drawing folio based on their own interests and ideas.

Fine Art

Students learn about a variety of artists and their practices, they study the techniques and processes used by the artists and make connections to the meanings and intentions of the artist. In response to the artworks studied, students plan and make their own artworks using visual conventions to express ideas and convey meaning. Students also explore techniques and processes in the mediums of painting, printmaking and drawing.

Introduction to Art

In this course students explore 2D art forms such as drawing, rendering, colour theory and painting, along with 3D art forms such as sculpture and ceramics. Students are encouraged to explore a wide variety of materials as they build upon their knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design.

Media and Society

This course investigates discourses that exist in society and how these are represented in media texts. Analysis draws from social media trends to film and television texts. After analysing individual texts, students move to understanding multiplatform narratives by exploring how media producers create narratives through multiplatform messages. This investigation can include ideas such as the Marvel, DC and Star Wars Universes through online promotion, TV spin offs, films and gaming. This knowledge culminates in the final media production which involves the preproduction, production and post production of a media product of the student’s choice. This is in line with the open ended tasks of the VCE and is modelled on the media process expected, with particular emphasis on organisation, collaboration and creativity.

Media: Stories and Genre

Formerly known as ‘Media: Telling Stories.’ Students explore how media creators tell a story through the mediums of photography and film. They will analyse the use of codes and conventions, and how they incite emotions from specific audiences. Students also study genres by investigating how films are constructed to conform to a particular genre. The knowledge gained from these investigations is used to generate the students’ own stories, by creating a short film or photographic series.

Media: Film and Sound

Formerly known as ‘4D Media.’ Students research radio history and analyse audience and genre expectations surrounding radio and podcast media forms. They then create a radio/ podcast narrowcast for a specified audience. Students then move into Audio Visual media forms of film and animation by exploring and demonstrating the codes of film making: camera, acting, mis-en-scene, editing, lighting and sound. This will culminate in the creation of a 1 minute film and stop motion animation including pre-production and audience considerations.

Media: Photography and Print

Formerly known as ‘2D Media.’ In this subject students will learn how to operate a DSLR camera, including how to manipulate manual functions such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO. They create a folio of examples that demonstrate their understanding of this. Students then use their knowledge to plan, create and refine a photographic series that explores a theme. The second part of this subject involves exploring print media, such as magazines and graphic novels. Students analyse the codes and conventions of these media products and create a folio of written and visual planning documents for their own print media idea. Students use programs such as Adobe Photoshop to create their print media.

Exploring Media

Formerly known as ‘Media and Manipulation.’ Students investigate the use of media techniques across several media forms. In the first instance, students explore print media such as film posters and magazines, and how these are used to engage audiences and tell stories. Students learn to analyse film and gaming examples and discuss how they affect audiences. They will also plan and create media products, such as music videos. In doing so, they will learn valuable technical skills and become familiar with Adobe programs such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

Industry and Design

Students learn to identify a range of purposes, contexts and target audiences for all three design fields. Students are to break down the three design fields and analyse the designer’s practices of specific designers past and present. Students are given briefs for all three design fields and are to show a mini folio of work that explores a design process. The student demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the media, methods and materials used. Their responses show evidence of understanding of the designer’s application of the design elements and principles. They discuss the techniques and processes used by designers in establishing briefs and in designing and producing visual communications that fulfil clients’ needs.

Visual Communication Design

Students follow a design process and are to create a range of ideas that reflect the chosen brief. They are to explore and research existing examples and create ideas manually and digitally in both communication and industrial design systems. They are to use a range of elements and principles and develop their ideas. Students will look at past and present examples and provide a range of annotations throughout their folio. They will need to show a range of critical and reflective thinking and provide folios under communication design with correct communication

Architecture and Model Making

Students are to design projects for a specific client. They are to research interior and exterior resources and annotate their findings. They are to create a range of floor plans and exterior drawings focusing on the constraints given to them. They will learn how to use design thinking strategies in their work and provide a clear design process in their folio. They are to show an understanding of conventions and dimensions, referencing correct scale and elevations. Students are to show a range of manual and digital methods and will be able to create a range of 3D model representations to scale with specific textures required in each assessment.

Architecture Introduction

Students explore a range of research and designer practices in the field of visual communication. They use creative, critical and reflective thinking to work through the design process. Students explore sustainable practices and create their own designs using technical drawing conventions. They explore a range of elements and principles, manual drawing and a range of methods, media and materials. They learn to design for a specific context, purpose and target audience.

Design Process

Students will learn how to follow a design process. They are given a brief from a client, and would need to demonstrate an ability to follow the constraints of the client’s needs. Students will develop a folio of work that includes experimentation and follows technical constraints.

Training

Adobe Suite Training

In this self-directed subject, students will explore Adobe programs such as Premiere Pro, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Lightroom and Audition. They will work through tutorials to attain microcredentials in the various programs and improve their understanding and technical skills. As a multi-stage subject, students may choose this subject multiple times in order to build on their skills. Knowledge of these programs can assist students in Visual Art subjects such as media, visual communication design and art, as these subjects often require digital productions, as well as future career pathways.

Introduction to Media and Visual Communication

This course introduces students to skills and knowledge explored in the subjects of Media and Visual Communication and Design. Students will learn about advertising from both perspectives, and design a folio of planning documents as well as a product. They will design a logo for their product, and learn how to advertise it using mediums of print, film and radio.

Media

Media is deeply embedded within life and culture. It entertains, teaches, informs, and shapes our perception of our lives and the world in which we live. The relationship between media and audience is complex, especially in light of rapidly changing technology. In this study, students explore the construction and storytelling techniques of various media forms, including film, television, and photography. They analyse the creative choices involved in these productions, such as the use of lighting and sound to convey meaning in a film. Additionally, students examine the concepts of influence, power, audience, agency, and the role media plays in shaping views and values. Students harness this theoretical knowledge to produce their own media products, such as short films and photographic series. They develop their technical skills by operating media equipment and software. In this way, they gain a critical understanding of media and their role as both producers and consumers of media products.

Visual Communication Design

Art: Studio Practice

By combining a focused study of artworks, art practice and practical art making, you will recognise the interplay between research, art practice and the analysis and interpretation of art works.

Art: Exploring Materials

Students build on their awareness of how and why artists, craftspeople and designers realise their ideas through different visual arts practices. They refine their personal aesthetic through working and responding perceptively as an artist, craftsperson or audience. They identify and explain how artists and audiences interpret artworks through explorations of different viewpoints. As they make and respond to visual artworks, students use conceptual explanations to critically reflect on the contribution of visual arts practitioners. They adapt ideas, visual images and practices from selected artists and use them to inform their own personal aesthetic when making artworks and presenting them to an audience. As they experience visual arts, students draw on artworks from a range of cultures, times and locations. They reflect on the development of different traditional and contemporary styles of art works. Students extend their understanding of safe visual arts practices and choose to use sustainable materials, techniques and technologies.

Sketching and Drawing

Students will develop skills in sketching and drawing using materials such as graphite and charcoal. Students will experiment with various drawing techniques and ideas. They produce a folio of drawings and make connections to the work of other artists when developing their own artworks.

Fine Art

Students will explore a range of materials and techniques. They trial hand building techniques using clay. They apply these skills to develop an artwork inspired by the work of other artists and artisans from different cultural and historical contexts. Students will study colour theory and develop a portrait in acrylic paint, with an emphasis upon colour, tone, and proportion.

Exploring Media

In Exploring Media students investigate the use of media techniques across several media forms. Students explore the print media forms of film posters, newspapers and magazines, and how these are used to engage audiences and tell stories. These skills are then used to create media in these forms. Student explore how genres are established, and complete an investigation into Film Noir. They use their knowledge of genre theory to plan, produce and edit a film sequence with the help of their peers. This subject provides students with an introduction to key media technologies and software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere Pro.

Visual Communication Design

Visual Communication Design is where students start to refine their own personal style as a visual designer. Students engage in hands-on projects that blend creativity with practical skills, concentrating on the development of messages and objects through visual language. Students participate in engaging critiques, where work is presented to gain insights from peers. Projects explore areas such as brand strategy, product development and sustainable design practices. Students examine how technology, culture, and the environment can influence design decisions, and explore how design can spark change. Students become proficient in the Visual Communication Design process and get comfortable with the tools and techniques employed across various design disciplines.

The heart of a business’ success lies in its marketing. Without it, a business may offer the best products or services out there, but potential customers wouldn’t know that it exists. In this course, students analyse case studies and explore how modern marketing is evolving due to ever-changing apps and technology. Students then apply this knowledge by developing marketing plans for projects in their own chosen design and media forms, focusing on technique, research, audience characteristics and teamwork.

Introduction to Media and Visual Communication

In Art there are two distinct streams that both lead to VCE Studio Arts. One stream is dedicated to two-dimensional art and the other is three-dimensional art.In Visual Communication Design there are two distinct streams that both lead to VCE Visual Communication Design. One stream is dedicated to Architecture and the other to Design. For cinema enthusiasts, Cinema Studies is offered under English.
